Prayer Flags Offering
at the Land of Arya Tara
Following the terma instructions of Tertön Jigme Nuden Dorje to avert world conflicts and environmental harm, prayer flags inscribed with the Benza Guru mantra are hung in the four directions across high mountain slopes. As the wind blows, the printed mantras spread blessings of peace, protection, and harmony across the earth and sky.
What are Prayer Flags?
In Tibetan Buddhism, prayer flags are simple yet highly profound spiritual devices. Vertical ones are strung together to hang across great distances; these are known as Lung Ta; while horizontal ones hang on tall poles and are called Dar Cho. "Lung" means air or wind and "Ta" means horse, while "Dar" means to increase life, fortune, health, and wealth, and "Cho" refers to all sentient beings.
The sacred texts, images, and mantras are printed directly onto the cloth. When the wind blows against them, it carries the prayers of peace, compassion, power, and wisdom into the surrounding environment.

Buddhism teaches that our current suffering, sickness, and life obstacles stem from past non-virtuous actions. Hanging prayer flags is an excellent way to purify this negative karma without experiencing its harsh results. It works on the principle of dependent-arising: by intentionally sending out goodwill to the world, you change your own karmic trajectory.

Sacred Etiquette and Impermanence
Because prayer flags contain holy mantras, they must be treated with deep respect. Over time, the wind and sun will naturally cause the flags to fade and fray.
This is not viewed as a negative occurrence; it means the blessings have successfully dissolved into the universe. When replacing old flags with a new set, the old flags are traditionally burned respectfully in a clean fire rather than discarded in the trash.
